thinking green

Our theme at MOPS this week was "going green." One of my fellow green-group moms spoke about the decisions and changes that her family has made in order to live a more healthy and earth-friendly life. It was very encouraging and inspiring and got me all fired up again to do the same.

At some point, I'd like to make a list of all the changes we've made so far. Topping that list would be our switch to cloth diapers. I'm not sure that it has a huge effect on the environment (or on our wallet - at least not until the second baby wears them), but it's nice to not take a bag full of disposables out to the curb every week. Plus, he's just so darn cute in them, isn't he?

Lately, however, David has been waking up wet and we've had to revert to disposables at nighttime. This isn't a big deal because we have leftovers from our pre-cloth days, but it bugs me that we have to use them at all. So, my next baby step towards being green is to find a nighttime cloth solution for him.

Inspired by Sara's talk at MOPS, I also want to start being more mindful of the products I use to clean around here. I borrowed a couple books from the library and plan to make this my next medium-sized step towards being green. I don't think it should be too hard...I just have to convince Keith to give up the Scrubbin' Bubbles.

I'm proud of you, sister. I was really happy when I found out you switched to cloth diapers, and whenever I hear people talking about them, I say that my sister uses them!

If I ever have a kid (probably not), I use cloth diapers too.

We used cloth diapers with 100 % wool hand knitted covers over them. A few years back a company started that made mucho dinero selling something similar called biobottoms. Don't know if they are still around, but I wished I had taken grandma's knitting to the corporate level. In the day, I would hand a cloth diapered baby over with a flannel covered puddle pad to protect the willing lap.
